The Teacher

Teaching experience

I studied International Teacher Education for Primary Schools for two years, during which I gained a total of four months of classroom teaching experience through internships. I have been tutoring Math online since 2023, having taught over 1500 hours of lessons in that time. My students are between the ages of 6 and 18.

I have taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL, which also happen to be my initials) as well as literary analysis and writing (essays, stories). I scored well in Higher Level IB English A Language and Literature, and tend to teach the methods I learned there.

About me

I am twenty-three years old and have been living in the Netherlands since 2022, though I was born in the United States and grew up in Germany. I was raised bilingually with English and German and spent most of my schooling in international schools. I am currently studying Linguistics with a focus on Language and Cognition. In my spare time I enjoy logic puzzles like Minesweeper and Sudoku, reading, creative writing, painting, photography, and bouldering and ballet, among other things. I have a ten-year-old cat named Toaster who can often be found in the background during lessons.

The Lessons

My Philosophy

Learning should be fun, and the first step in learning something is believing that you can learn it. Lessons with me often take the form of casual conversation – it is important to me that my students feel safe and comfortable in the environment that we create. I am not afraid to make a fool of myself in order to demonstrate that making mistakes does not equal failure. I can provide help with homework or specific test prep, or more generally with catching up to a certain level or working ahead.

Math

I work a lot with games and other playful learning methods. I often create my own activities based on what my students need. I believe in meeting the learner where their interests lay, be that Minecraft or reading or insects. I design my lessons around my students‘ interests and curiosities, while still making sure to cover all the necessary materials. For Math lessons, I share the screen of my iPad on Zoom so that all notes I take are visible. Lessons are usually a mix of explanations, solving problems together, and giving the student some time to try things on their own. I can give homework if that is preferred.

English

My approach for English as a Foreign Language is called Content and Language Integrated Learning, whereby grammar and vocabulary is taught at the same time as new content (for example, a lesson about volcano eruptions taught in English where we focus on past tense verbs). This method allows for natural conversation and questions to arise.
For literary analysis and writing I work through conversation and by providing examples, and suggestions on students‘ work.

Scheduling

Types of lessons

The standard lesson length that I offer is 50 minutes, though there are also options for 25, 75, and 100 minute lessons (the longer ones can also have short breaks if needed that do not count toward the lesson time). Trial lessons are always 25 minutes.

I schedule through the service Meetergo. As I am new to using it, there may still be a few issues. Please let me know if you run into any problems.

It is possible to book recurring lessons.

Pricing

About my pricing

Every child should be able to get the help that they need. I aim to be able to provide my services to anyone who could benefit from them. To make this work I have implemented a sliding scale for my lesson prices. The cost per lesson is based on your income and works on the honor system – I do not require proof of anything. If those who can afford it pay proportionately more, it will allow me to provide lessons at a lower rate for those who need it.

The first four lessons (not including the trail lesson) will be charged individually, after that you can opt to pay at the end of every month for the lessons that took place. Prepaid lesson packages with a slight discount are also available on a limited basis.

Testimonials

Sabrina

Emery teaches lessons to three of our children. Each one learns differently and has a different character. He manages to adapt the lessons for each individual and address them personally. All three are enthusiastic and love learning with Emery. They even argue about who gets the next lesson. Emery always gives the children a good feeling, even or especially when they struggle with something. We can recommend him without reservation.

Emery is lovely, friendly, and my 8-year-old daughter has already learned a lot with him. Our daughter used to not like math, but with Emery she enjoys learning.

The lessons with Emery are really fun for me. He explains very well and is relaxed and has a sense of humor – so a really cool teacher. I’ve never learned math so „easily“ before.
